TimberLab Congratulates Studio Pacific as Project Overall Winner at 2018 NZ Wood-Resene Timber Design Awards.

The He Tohu Document Room in Wellington took out the Interior Innovation award & then went on to be judged Overall Winner at last week’s event in Auckland. Some of the judges’ comments – “Excellent showcase for digital technology and computer-numerically-controlled (CNC) milling.” / “The flowing form of this space creates a sense of highly developed manufacturing technologies being woven together with traditional timber materials to articulate both the rich cultural past and the optimistic future of the room contents.” / “The beautiful organic curves and wave patterns are the result of highly creative, thoughtful design and outstanding craftsmanship.”

TimberLab’s contribution –

  • Assisted designers in deciding the best system to achieve the manufacture & construction of the complex forms; i.e. the building up from wooden blocks.
  • Manufactured 480 rimu blocks & panels that form the irregular shape of the waka huia (treasure box); illustrating the complex forms and shapes that can be achieved with CNC machining. Final shaping achieved using Greenmount Espies 5 Axis Chronos CNC.
  • Showcased the difference between mediocre & high-end detailing; exhibiting the decorative nature of structural elements that can be achieved.
  • Manufactured and prefabricated LVL portal exoskeleton structure, supporting complete rimu waka huia.
