The results of the NZ Wood Resene Timber Design Awards 2020 were announced in April and as always, did not disappoint.
The awards are a highly acclaimed, bi-annual event showcasing the innovative, structural and aesthetic use of timber by New Zealand architects and engineers; the entrants providing projects of an exceptionally high standard.
ST PATRICK’S CHURCH, Lincoln, NZ – Winner of Public Design Award
St Patrick’s Church is a stunning example of how structural timber elements can be expressed as the main architectural feature of a building. NZ grown Radiata Pine with a clear coat finish provides a warm feel for the Church environment.
The 250m2 building has glulam y-shaped portal frames spanning 11.6m across the open floor space. Concealed, epoxy bar fixings at the base, knee and apex connections create a seamless portal structure which flows throughout the building. Accurate CNC processing ensured all exposed connections could be factory fabricated without the need for joinery site works.

BOTANY TOYOTA, Auckland, NZ – Winner of Commercial Design Award
TimberLab was delighted to be involved with the creation of Toyota’s Botany store. This eye-catching solution is a little more stylish than a concrete box or run-of-the-mill steel portal frame,

STAR MOUNTAIN PLAZA, Port Moresby, PNG – Highly Commended in Public Design Award
TimberLab is proud to be part of the team that produced this spectacular demonstration of timber’s beauty, versatility and strength and congratulates all winners and all those involved in this spectacular, award-winning structure.
With early contract consultation between project management consultants Stratum Unlimited, Ignite Architects, Grimshaw Architecture, Kirk Roberts Consulting and TimberLab Solutions; the most cost efficient and build-able solution came off the drawing board before manufacture and construction began.
AUCKLAND ZOO ADMINISTRATION BUILDING, Auckland, NZ – Highly Commended in Commercial Design Award
When Auckland Zoo decided they needed a new administration space, Ignite Architects was engaged to design a modern workspace to suit their future needs. The result is a light filled open space perfect for collaboration and team engagement, with an exposed timber structure providing a warm, calm and inviting atmosphere.
Ignite worked early with TimberLab Solutions and BGT engineers in a DFMA (Design for Manufacture and Assembly) approach which saw prefabricated Glulam components delivered to site with CNC detailing completed and connections pre fitted in the factory for a consistent quality finish and a fast assembly on site.
