The Project
New Zealand
The Waipawa Substation project required a robust construction solution that could withstand the demands of essential infrastructure while overcoming the logistical challenges of a remote location. Efficient material transport, rapid installation, and structural integrity were critical to ensuring a successful build within a tight timeframe.
Red Stag TimberLab’s Involvement
Red Stag TimberLab (RSTL) was engaged early in the design phase to supply and manufacture all structural timber components, including 71m2 of Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) for the floors, walls, and roof. RSTL’s expertise ensured a streamlined and efficient build through:
- Precision Prefabrication: The structural timber components were manufactured off-site to absolute precision, allowing for streamlined transport and assembly. Pre-integrated connections with brackets and fixings enabled an efficient and error-free build.
- Single-Source Supply: By acting as a single-source supplier, RSTL provided a comprehensive drawing package, ensuring seamless connection detailing and reducing shop drawing review times. Standardized connection details and locally sourced screws and bracketry kept the project on schedule and within budget.
- Weather Protection: The applied membrane provided additional protection during construction, ensuring the structure remained watertight from the outset.
Results
Through off-site manufacturing, digital fabrication, and sustainable practices, RSTL played a key role in delivering the Waipawa Substation efficiently and effectively. The prefabricated CLT elements facilitated a rapid build, minimized on-site disruptions, and provided a durable, high-integrity solution for essential infrastructure. This method ensured the entire CLT structure was erected and enclosed within just three days, significantly reducing on-site labour requirements.
This project highlights CLT as an ideal solution for infrastructure, offering durability and rapid construction in remote locations.
Red Stag Renewable Energy
The extensive use of CLT and Glulam highlighted the project’s commitment to sustainability. As the lowest-carbon CLT supplier in New Zealand, Red Stag TimberLab leverages its self-sufficient renewable energy generation to set a benchmark in sustainable construction practices.
- Bio-Fuel Energy: Offcuts from sawing and planning are utilized as bio-fuel to generate electricity and provide thermal energy for drying timber. Additionally, Red Stag Timber exports surplus electricity to the national grid, contributing to New Zealand’s energy needs.
- Thermal Energy Efficiency: By using wood waste as the energy source for kiln drying – a process that accounts for over 85% of a modern sawmill’s energy usage, Red Stag Timber minimizes CO2 emissions and landfill waste.
