AVONDALE COLLEGE
Project Description
CREDITS: Architect: Jasmax / Contractor: NZ Strong
One of the outstanding features of the rebuild at Avondale College is the impressive timber columns. As the main supporting elements to the high flying central internal courtyard, these imposing columns are nearly 10m long. What makes them even more significant to the College is that TimberLab manufactured them from recycled Matai timber retrieved from old structures on site. The final distinction was achieved when TimberLab turned these large rectangular Glulam columns into perfectly round 250 diameter poles using their unique oversized lathe.
To complete the detailed design of Architect Jasmax, the ends of the poles were tapered, and carefully detailed steel pin connections were inserted in TimberLab’s factory.
Once on-site, the main Contractor, NZ Strong, locked them into place in the “V” formation; creating this high flying spacious central gathering space.
