The architect’s reflected ceiling plan showed 4 suspended dhow hulls and was originally designed as steel frames and trusses. The use of 34m long x 7m deep “Keel” trusses proved more cost effective than steel with all members pre-assembled in the Auckland factory.
Four site assembled trusses were craned into place at 11m centres and the hull shape was formed with curved Glulam gunwale and ribs. The service area for ducting, etc about gunwale and planking to be fixed to ribs for exposed hull shape.
Completed feature boat roof with main curved truss chord also expressed as decorative keel. Total roof area supported by structure is 34m x 56m.
