UNITEC, THE HUB
Project Description
CREDITS: Architect: asc architects / Engineer: Structus / Builder: Ebert Construction
TimberLab’s ability to expertly craft large scale components with precision and consistency were showcased in this stunning roof structure, incorporating large exposed Glulam roof rafters in a diagrid arrangement.
The roof structure spans over 31m and covers an overall building length of 65; the large rafters with a section size of 450x180mm and up to 26.2m long were precision detailed on our 5 Axis CNC machine to required lengths and to suit the steel hub connections.
The large skylights designed to fit into the diamond shaped voids created by the glulam rafters, flood the 3-storey atrium with natural light as does the highlight glazed façade area supported by Glulam posts set on alternate angles. The Glulam roof structure extends beyond the outer envelopes to form a cantilevered covered entry at the main entrance.
Full 3D modelling of the structure was done by TimberLab which enabled us to model all steel connections and complete coordination checks between timber and steel elements. This avoided any clashes and allowed us to coordinate with other structural trades.
TimberLab provided a full kit-set package for Ebert Construction, including all brackets and fixings required to complete the Glulam installation.
Congratulations to the team at asc architects and Structus Engineers for a quality, well thought out design and to Ebert Construction for completing the structure with such a high level of finish.
