Onsite Care
Data Sheet
Important: Laminated timber must be kept dry at all times
Handling
» Avoid Impact Damage: DO not drop, jar, or drag EWPs.
» Protection & Minimizing Stress: Care should be taken to prevent damage to surfaces and to not over-stress EWPs during transport and erection.
» Lifting: Protection must be used against strops, chains or wire ropes when loading, unloading & transporting.
» Balance Load: Use Spreaders on long members where applicable. Position slings appropriately for a well-balanced load and control movement with guylines when moving.
Onsite Storage & Care
» Cover: Store EWPs under cover, in a well-drained area, away from vegetation and moisture.
» Stacking: Stack EWPs at least 200mm above level ground with adequate dunnage to prevent bending or bowling. Fillet stack EWPs to ensure airflow around all surfaces.
» Wrapping: If Glulam members are wrapped, split along the underside of the wrapping to permit to allow water drainage. Wrapping should not be removed until the last practicable moment. Partial removal may result in patchy discolouration.
Protection & Painting of Finished Members
EWPs are made from kiln-dried timber and require proper protection from moisture and other environmental elements for as long as possible:
» Temporary Sealant: All members are coated with at least one coat of temporary water protection sealant as per the manufacturer’s recommendations. A minimum of two coats of sealer must be applied to the end grain, one coat is applied at the factory and the second coat on-site by others.
» Protective Coatings/Reapplication: Exposure to moisture can cause movement and stress in the timber. The factory-applied sealer typically provides protection for 8-10 weeks. If the timber remains exposed beyond this period, it must be recoated with your chosen coating system. A high-quality paint or stain system is recommended.
» Compatibility: Red Stag TimberLab applies a solvent-based sealer. After 24 hours, most film-forming and non-film-forming wood finishes can be applied. Conduct a test patch if unsure.
» Surface Preparation: Before applying any coatings, ensure all surfaces are clean, dry, and free from mould or fungi.
» Avoid Dark Colours: Dark paint or stains attract heat, which may cause resin bleeding, distortion, and cracking due to environmental changes. Only a qualified installer should handle this product.
