92m Span Timber Bridge

Red Stag TimberLab (RSTL) was engaged to design, manufacture and deliver the structural timber components for a striking 92-metre span glulam bridge; commissioned by the local authority in Doha, Qatar. The structural engineering design and detailed construction drawings were completed by Enovate Consultants, who also coordinated with local engineers to design the supporting pile foundations.

Digital Precision and Off-site Fabrication

The bridge was designed in three prefabricated sections. Each section was made up from 2x 1800mm x 225mm glulam girders, with glulam support beams, tie beams, solid timber joists, and galvanised 24mm-diameter diagonal bracing rods. The walking surface features 180 x 45 grooved decking for grip and durability.

The two end sections were pre-assembled on land and lifted into position onto the supporting piles. The central span was transported to the middle of the water and seamlessly installed into place via barge. Thanks to precision fabrication, no on-site adjustments were necessary. Discreetly designed hidden splice joints were used to connect the large beams, maintaining clean aesthetics and structural integrity.

Red Stag TimberLab utilised 3D modelling and 5-axis CNC machining to deliver high-precision timber components. All parts were prefabricated off-site, complete with pre-installed brackets and fixings, enabling efficient transport and rapid, error-free assembly on site. Custom-profiled glulam handrails were also fitted along the bridge, ensuring user safety and comfort.

Why Glulam for Bridge Construction?

Glulam is a lightweight, high-performance, and visually appealing material ideal for both pedestrian and vehicular bridge applications. Key advantages include:
  • Manufactured from treated timber to meet exterior durability requirements.
  • High strength-to-weight ratio.
  • Cost-effective for curved and long-span applications, with reduced foundation requirements, easier material handling, and lower labour and crane costs due to its lightweight nature.
  • Sustainable and renewable resource.
  • Aesthetic architectural appeal.
Modern timber treatment and finishing methods ensure long service life with proper maintenance, as demonstrated by the durability and elegance of this impressive bridge toboggan aquatique gonflable.
