The Project
New Zealand
The 63 Tasman Road project aimed to integrate innovative mass timber solutions for structural performance, functionality, and aesthetic appeal. Red Stag TimberLab Limited, the chosen mass timber supplier, played a crucial role in supplying quality Cross-laminated timber (CLT) components for the project.
The RSTL team collaborated with Waikato Construction Management Ltd (WCML) to supply CLT floors (50m³) and stairs (5m³). This collaboration marked WCML’s first experience with CLT, which was RSTL’s pleasure in addressing this by providing comprehensive support and guidance throughout the project, ensuring that WCML was equipped with the necessary knowledge and resources to effectively work with CLT.
The design of the CLT components achieved an ideal blend of structural performance, functionality, and aesthetic appeal, with exposed floors adding to the visual appeal of the common areas.
Digital Fabrication
All elements of the project were meticulously coordinated within a single 3D model, facilitating precision CNC profiling to exact dimensions. This meticulous approach ensured a sophisticated level of detail to the bulk mass timber structure, enhancing its aesthetic appeal and structural integrity.
The utilization of digital fabrication was imperative for the seamless integration of all components, including metalwork brackets and fixings, to be delivered to the site as a kitset, ensuring a flawless installation of this bespoke stairwell onsite.
Results
The CLT components not only met the project’s structural requirements but also contributed to its innovative design and aesthetic appeal. The exposed CLT floors in the common areas added a distinctive visual element while showcasing the versatility and beauty of timber as a construction material.
Red Stag TimberLab Limited’s involvement in the 63 Tasman Road construction project demonstrates the potential and results of using high-quality CLT components with digital fabrication for innovative and sustainable construction solutions. Through collaborative partnerships and a commitment to excellence, Red Stag TimberLab continues to pave the way for the adoption of mass timber and innovative technologies in modern construction projects, showcasing the beauty, versatility, and structural performance of timber as a building material.
