KATARA BRIDGE

Doha, Qatar

Project Description

CREDITS: Design Consultants: Enovate / Contractor: Doha Floors, Qatar

TimberLab was contracted by Doha Floors to provide this 92m span pedestrian timber Glulam bridge for the Local Authority in Doha, Qatar. Enovate Consultants provided the structural engineering design and construction drawings to TimberLab and liaised with local engineers for the supporting pile structures.

The structure comprised three segments (1800 x 225), consisting of support beams, glulam tie beams, MSg8 solid joists and galvanised 24 diameter diagonal bracing rods, along with 180 x 45 grooved decking.

The end segments were assembled as a complete unit on land and lifted onto supporting piles with the centre section being barged out to the middle of the water and lifted into place; fitting perfectly with no adjustment required. Clever use of hidden splice joints provides connection of the large beams.

Use of 3D modelling and CNC 5 axis machining ensured accuracy and precision of all members for ease of assembly.

Handrails providing  appropriate height and assistance were fitted the length of the bridge.

Glulam bridges offer a lightweight, durable and environmentally acceptable solution for both pedestrian and road situations – the ideal material for bridge building

  • Manufactured from treated timber to exterior specification
  • Technical properties of durability, high strength-to-weight ratio of timber
  • Cost effectiveness
  • Aesthetic appeal

Modern techniques of preservative treatment and finishing ensure long life with correct maintenance as can be seen in this impressive structure.
